One of the most popular indoor plants in our online store Beauty Flowers is a dracaena. It allows you to quickly green your workplace or recreation area.

It is important to remember that these plants increase in size very quickly. Because of this, in a short period of time, the soil inside the pot can lose nutrients, and the root system will need more space. We suggest you familiarize yourself with the simple rules for moving a dracaena to a new container.

Preparing the pot

Buy a new container 3 cm wider than the previous one. Pour a layer of expanded clay on the bottom. If there are no holes in the pot, the plant can be placed in universal granulate.

Soil selection

Dracaena will be especially comfortable in light, quickly drying soil, through which air easily reaches the root system. There are two options:

  • Special soil for dracaenas and palms. It has an optimal composition, that is, this product is preferable.
  • A mixture of fertile soil and sand - if you can't buy soil.

Note: you need to apply fertilizer every 2 weeks from spring to autumn.

Tidying up the roots

Carefully lay the old pot with the plant on its side. Try to get the top layer of soil. Carefully remove the dracaena. Remove the old soil from the roots.

If the roots are stuck in the drainage holes, take them out slowly, trying not to damage them. Inspect them and, if you see rotten areas, break them off. Moisten the roots with a spray bottle.

Moving to a new pot

Plant the plant in a new growing place. Slowly fill the inter-root space with soil. It is important to make sure that the trunk of the dracaena is located in the center of the container.

We do not recommend digging the plant too deep. It is enough that there is 1 cm of soil at the base of the trunk. To help the dracaena adapt faster, water it with water mixed with fertilizer. If the soil has settled, replenish the deficiency.

Caring for dracaena after replanting

Once in a new place, the plant will be under stress for about a couple of weeks. During this time, the root system will regenerate: areas damaged during the move to a more spacious pot will be restored. If you want the roots to become as strong as possible, water the plant with a preparation for the care of this vegetative organ for two months.

The Beauty Flowers team advises replanting dracaena in spring or summer, when a new round of growth begins. A young plant needs an annual replant.
