Let's say you bought yourself a gorgeous orchid in our indoor plants category, or received a flower as a gift, and enjoyed its amazing bloom for a long time. But now your favorite window sill inhabitant has finished blooming, you wait for six months, a year, and there are still no new flower stalks.

The questions arise: "What's the problem?" and "Maybe I'm doing something wrong?" They are quite natural, so our flower delivery service Beauty Flowers has collected the most common reasons for the absence of flowers in an orchid in this article.

Abundance of moisture is a destructive factor

Orchid, also known to many as phalaenopsis, contrary to the beliefs of many people, does not like over-watering. There are different ways to water the tropical guest:

  • The usual one - from a watering can.
  • The immersion method - when the pot with the plant is placed in a container with water for 20 minutes.
  • Spraying from a spray bottle.

The main thing is to water the orchid as needed: when the roots become lighter or when there are no drops of condensation inside the pot. Otherwise, the roots may begin to rot, then it is not surprising that the bright representative of the flora will not delight you with flowers.

You can alternate watering and spraying to achieve intense flowering. Always remember: it is easier to revive a dried orchid than an over-watered one.

Incorrectly selected filler, fertilizer or lighting

Orchids cannot be kept in the ground. In the natural environment, the flower lives on trees and feeds on moisture from their surface. That is, the best filler for a flowerpot will be tree bark. You can also put some sphagnum inside.

If you want to fertilize the plant, we recommend using a composition that has a balanced content of phosphorus, nitrogen, potassium and microelements. It is better to combine fertilization with watering.

Proper lighting is another important factor for the flowering of phalaenopsis. If it is dark, you should not expect a flower stalk. This representative of the flora requires 10 hours of diffused light per day. But direct rays are undesirable. They can burn the leaves.

The natural cycle is disrupted

In the natural environment, orchids experience periods of rain and drought. The latter is a stress factor that affects the need to continue the species and lay flower buds. By the beginning of the rainy season, the plant blooms.

Drought can be created artificially. Stop watering for 2 or even 3 weeks, let the roots dry out. Then resume watering. If the flower stalk appeared earlier, then you need to reward the flower with a life-giving portion of moisture.
