Cats and dogs need to eat greens, which are not only a source of vitamins and microelements for them, but also allow them to cleanse their stomachs. That's why some indoor plants fall under the scope, which our four-legged friends nibble with pleasure.
Most often such a ‘pest’ are cats. Because of their activity and jumping ability, they often explore the entire space of the dwelling, and it can be quite difficult to find an inaccessible place for indoor flowers so that they do not push the pot.
If you try a little, it is quite realistic to protect your plants from the encroachments of our pets.
Ways to protect plants with folk remedies
The simplest and most effective way will be the use of various means with a sharp and unpleasant odour for animals. Dogs and cats do not tolerate such odours:
- alcohol;
- any citrus fruits;
- pepper;
- vinegar;
- lavender;
- mustard.
Any of these remedies can be found in the kitchen armoury or in the form of essential oils. Drip or pour a little on a cotton disc or in a small bowl and place it near the plant your pet has taken a liking to. Means with a pungent odour and burning spices will irritate the mucous membranes of the pet, which will cause him unpleasant sensations.
Alcohol or vinegar can be sprayed on the plant itself. However, you should choose the necessary concentration of the remedy, so as not to harm the flowers.
Protecting plants and nurturing your pet
If you have the opportunity to train the animal for some time, you can use the technique of scaring off, spraying the cat or dog with water from a sprayer. Over time, the animal will learn that when it tries to approach the plant, it will be sprayed with water. At the same time, it is important not to wait for the pet to start chewing on the flower, but to take a prohibitive action even when approaching it.
Often our pets like to rake the earth in pots. In this case, the use of pebbles, cones, shells or broken ceramics placed on the surface of the soil will help. In this way you can protect the plant from the encroachments of mossy plants and at the same time create a decorative ornament that can be harmoniously integrated into the surrounding interior.
However, the most humane way is to grow special greens, which will be eaten by your pet. In this way, it can satisfy its needs and you can save your favourite plants.
