The drop in temperature during the winter, sharp changes between the outside and inside environment, as well as mechanical damage make transporting flowers a difficult task. In order to preserve their freshness and beauty and to ensure the safest possible conditions during transport and subsequent care, it is necessary to follow some rules.

Preparing flowers for transport

One of the biggest risks for different types of flowers is frost. The delicate and fragile stems and leaves of plants are extremely vulnerable to low temperatures. Cold weather can cause flowers to lose their attractiveness and freshness, or even die.

Under the influence of low temperatures, the moisture that fills the tissues of plants freezes, turning into ice crystals. The most vulnerable to frost are exotic plants such as roses, alstroemeria and orchids. Even for a short stay in the cold without proper protection, flowers lose their attractiveness.

Rules for transporting flowers in different conditions

How to organise proper transport and protect bouquets from the cold:

  • Ensure proper packing and insulation. It is necessary to carefully pack flowers, using fabric, kraft paper and other special materials to provide insulation. Keep in mind that polythene does not retain heat at all and does not promote air ventilation.
  • For longer transport, use bubble wrap and heat gels.
  • Choose the least traumatic transport method possible. The best option is a car. However, do not put the flowers in the boot, as it is not possible to ensure optimum temperature there.
  • If you have to move on foot or use public transport, take care of reliable packaging with a frame and additional insulation to protect the flowers from wind, precipitation, crumpling or other mechanical impact.

After delivery of flowers to the place, they need to create special conditions for adaptation in new conditions. Therefore, do not hurry to remove the packaging. Let them stand for 10-15 minutes, and then remove the layers of packaging one by one to avoid sudden temperature changes.

Once the flowers are used to the warmth, inspect for damage and renew the cuts before placing the plants in room temperature water.

Frost and cold weather are no reason to give up on flowers. Just try to follow all the recommendations, and the plants will give you a good mood with their freshness and beautiful appearance even in winter.
