The lifespan of cut flowers is short, and they may not delight us with their beauty and aromas for as long as we would like. But there are several simple ways to help extend this period. Be sure to change the water daily and trim the flowers correctly.
Saving flowers from wilting with trimming
After you bring the bouquet home, you need to trim the ends of the stems before placing them in water. This way, you ensure better absorption of liquid through the stem and prevent early wilting of the plants. Roses are especially demanding in this regard, as they can wither overnight.
There are care rules for each type of plant, but let's consider the general rules for trimming flowers, which will allow you to extend their attractiveness for several days.
- Use a very sharp blade to trim in one motion.
- Trim the stem by 2-3 cm at an angle of 45 °, increasing the surface of contact of the plant with water.
- Trim flowers under running water or in a container so that air bubbles do not get into the open channels of the stems and block them from receiving moisture.
- Trimming should be done daily.
- Leaves that come into contact with water should be removed to avoid rotting and bacterial growth.
- The best time for trimming is in the evening. Do not do this in the heat.
Sometimes trimming cannot save roses from wilting, and their buds droop. To save them, you can place them completely in a bath of water for a while or cut the stems short.
What will help keep the bouquet fresh
In addition to trimming the stems, there are a few more rules that help prolong the beauty of flowers:
- An aspirin tablet will not only nourish the plants, but also protect them from pathogenic bacteria.
- The optimal temperature for keeping a bouquet is 18-20 ° C.
- Most flowers do not tolerate the proximity of fruits, which emit ethylene, which contributes to their rapid wilting.
- Carnations and stems of similar flowers are cut under the knot.
- Tulips, irises, hyacinths, gladioli can be left uncut and several punctures can be made along the length of the stem. It is better to perform the procedure by immersing the stems in water.
Roses and plants with hollow stems - amaryllis, dahlias, delphiniums - should be cut daily, as well as changing the water. Other flowers can easily withstand 2-4 days without pruning.
