It is often possible to notice small gnats on indoor plants or bouquets. This is unpleasant and also dangerous for plants, especially indoor plants, because the soil is the breeding ground for parasites. So how to deal with gnats that attack cut and indoor flowers?

Where do gnats on indoor plants and bouquets come from?

In addition to the fact that gnats can get into the room with flowers, they can also get in through vents, open windows or doors.

There are other causes of gnats in the house:

  • Infested soil. For flowers in vases with untreated soil from the street, this is the most common cause. The same goes for cut flowers - they may have been grown on infested soil.
  • Excessive moisture. Overwatered soil for indoor plants and stagnant water in a vase for cut flowers are ideal breeding grounds for midges and drosophila fruit flies.
  • Poor ventilation in the room. Stale air is also a perfect breeding ground for basement fungus gnats and other gnats.

Getting rid of this scourge is actually not very difficult. There are various solutions for treating plants, and you can also set up special traps or other means.

Ways to combat flower gnats

First of all, you should keep the room clean, so you can get rid of the existing colony of insects. It is also necessary to regularly wash pots and trays with indoor plants and change the water in cut plants.

The main methods of controlling gnats:

  • Treatment with a solution. In addition to ready-made means that can be bought in specialised shops, folk remedies have also proved themselves well: manganese, soap, garlic or tobacco solutions.
  • Traps. Suitable for both indoor flowers and fresh bouquets. These can be sticky tapes, which can be bought inexpensively in most retail outlets. Homemade traps made of sweet water, fruit, juice or honey in a small container also work well. It is covered with a film with small holes through which gnats get in, but cannot get out.
  • Repellents. This is one of the most effective ways to combat various insects. With them you can treat various surfaces where gnats accumulate, as well as the ground in pots with plants. The use of fumigators also helps.

If you follow these simple rules, treat the room and plants in time, change the water and do not allow stagnant moisture, your flowers will remain healthy and will delight you with their beauty.
